OFFICE of CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION'S STRATEGIC VISION (2009-2014)

DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2009-2010

2010-11 PRESCHOOL PROGRAM
Classes are currently filled; however, applications are still being accepted. Eligible children will be placed on a waiting list.  Openings are filled as they occur.

THE 21st CENTURY PROGRAM
Developing tomorrow’s leaders, today!

The 21st Century Community Learning Center is designed to develop community learning centers that will increase learning opportunities and enrichment support to students, families, and community members. This program will focus on helping students meeting academic standards in core subject areas such as reading and math.

SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES) PROGRAM
For the 2010-2011 school year, eligible Dunham Elementary, Raymond Elementary, Rockside Elementary and Stafford Elementary School students may take advantage of these services.

In 2002, Congress passed the No Child Left Behind Act. The Supplemental Educational Services (SES) provision of the law provides free tutoring services in Reading and Math to students in schools that have not met Annual Yearly Progress
over a three year period. There is no cost to these tutoring services to parents/guardians.

Who is eligible for SES tutoring?

Maple Heights’ students who attend a Title I school identified as School Improvement Year 2 are eligible for tutoring if they fit the following criteria:

  1. A student who receives a free or reduced-price lunch
  2. A student who needs help in Reading and/or Math due to low test scores based on:

·         Grades K-2 District Assessments

·         Grades 3-6 Ohio Achievement Tests

Under federal law, only economically disadvantaged students are eligible for tutoring. Students will be accepted until we reach maximum capacity. If it becomes necessary to prioritize students who will be receiving tutoring services, placement will be made in the following grade level order: Grade 6, Grade 5, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 2, and Grade 1. The lowest achievement students will receive top priority and remaining students will be placed on a waiting list.

Where does the tutoring take place?

There are many tutoring sites in the area. Tutoring may occur in tutoring centers, in the public library, in your home or church sites. Some service providers may seek to rent space through the school district. Some providers offer online computer tutoring if you have computer access available. Please check the Service Providers’ profile sheets or contact them directly for more information on the location of tutoring services. A full list of all state approved service providers can be found in a link provided below.

When is tutoring offered?

Different programs offer tutoring at different times. Some are after school and others are on Saturday. The listing of services in this booklet explains each service provider’s schedule. For those who do not have a profile sheet included in the booklet, you may contact individual providers for specific information. A full listing of all providers approved by the Ohio Department of Education is included at the back of the booklet.

Is transportation available?

Maple Heights CitySchool District does not provide transportation to tutoring services. Please check with the individual service providers to determine if they provide transportation.

What is the cost of tutoring?

There is no cost to parents for tutoring services. Tutoring companies will invoice the Maple Heights City Schools for the services they provide for your child. Cost per hour varies by tutoring company. There is a maximum dollar amount for services allowed which is identified by the Ohio Department of Education for students in the Maple HeightsCitySchool District. The amount identified for the 2010-11 school year is up to $1,345.72 As you select and contact the service provider, you are encouraged to ask about the number of hours your child will receive in tutoring services as determined by the maximum amount allowed divided by the service provider’s hourly rate.

My child has other needs. Is he/she eligible for tutoring?

Children with special needs are eligible for tutoring. However, not all SES providers can accommodate children with disabilities or children who are learning the English language. Check the listing or call the SES provider.

How do I choose an SES provider
?

1.     After reviewing this information, you are encouraged to contact a supplemental service provider for more information.

2.      Applications will be sent to the parent/guardian of eligible students. Complete the application and list your top two choices of service providers. The application includes a release of information section that allows the District to share relevant assessment information with your choice of service providers.

3.      Return the application as directed to the Curriculum Office at the Maple Heights Board of Education no earlier than September 30, 2010 and no later than January 31, 2011. DO NOT RETURN THE APPICATION TO YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL. Please note that if maximum capacity has been met, students will be prioritized on the basis of need across specific grade levels.

4.      Upon receiving the application, we will forward your application and child’s assessment data to your choice of service providers in the order you listed. If the provider(s) you choose decide(s) not to provide services to the Maple Heights City Schools, you will be contacted to choose an alternate provider. We will make every effort to arrange tutoring services for your child.

5.      The provider you choose will be given a copy of the application you submitted with your contact information.

6.      You must meet with the SES provider to develop and sign a Student Learning Plan for your child. The SES provider will contact you to arrange a time to meet. The Student Learning Plan sets goals for your child which the instructor will use to guide the tutoring sessions.

7.      Once the Student Learning Plan is completed and signed by the parent/guardian and provider, it is to be submitted to Henry Pettiegrew, Director of Curriculum & Instructional Technology, 14605 Granger Road, Maple Heights, 44137 for approval and processing. Tutoring begins only after the Student Learning Plan is completed, submitted by the SES provider and approved by the District.
